Lin McAdam rides into town on the trail of Dutch Henry Brown, only to find himself in a shooting competition against him. McAdam wins the prize, a one-in-a-thousand Winchester rifle, but Dutch steals it and leaves town. McAdam follows, intent on settling his old quarrel, while the rifle keeps changing hands and touching a number of lives.
In a marksmanship contest, Lin McAdam wins a prized Winchester rifle, which is immediately stolen by the runner-up, Dutch Henry Brown. This "story of a rifle" then follows McAdams' pursuit, and the rifle as it changes hands, until a final showdown and shoot-out on a rocky mountain precipice.
Lin McAdam wins a shooting competition in a small town and gets his hands on the highly sought after Winchester rifle. However, mere minutes later he has been assaulted and robbed of the weapon by the man who came second in a very tense final, Dutch Henry Brown. As Dutch and his men head out with the rifle, Lin and High-Spade set out in pursuit. However when Dean loses the Winchester in a card game he plots to track and murder the winner – but he does so too late because the gun has already been stolen by an Indian tribe ready for war. Meanwhile Lin and High-Spade travel right into the middle of an Indian siege of a small military unit.

Although it is very highly regarded I must admit to being rather unsure quite why, because this film didn't engage me in the way I hoped it would. The plot is a fairly interesting revenge story with a deep-seated family conflict at its core but it doesn't reach its potential very often. The problem for me was with the delivery; the idea of making the gun the focal point to build the story around seems like a good one but it isn't brought off well in practice. It is done at the expense of the character development and it means we are spread thinly over too may characters where really I was only interesting in a handful of them, meanwhile the actual following of the gun didn't seem to produce anything to compensate for it other than acting as a bit of a gimmick (a cruel word I know but one that I can't help but feel is applicable).

The cast are OK but they suffer from the lack of character. Stewart should have been much more interesting than he was but as it is he is still as sturdy and reliable in the lead role. Winters is given little to do but does well when called upon in the middle of the film. McNally is so much less of a presence than he should have been – where was the spite and hate that we are told exists within him. Mitchell was reasonable support, Duryea was unnecessary although Drake was alright.

Overall this is a distracting western that doesn't do anything that badly but doesn't do anything that well either. The use of the gun as a plot device didn't really work for me while following it stopped the characters developing as well as the plot implies they could have done. Distracting but, considering its reputation, rather disappointing.

This rifle passes among a diverse group of desperate characters. Some of these are: crazed highwayman, immoral gunrunner, savage young Indian chief, and McAdam's brother.

*Trivia/location/goofs- James Stewart has credited Winchester '73 for helping to save and redefine his career, after a series of post-war flops which threatened to damage his career. This is the film Mr. Stewart would first find and use as his favorite horse called, 'Pye'. Pye was part Quarter and Arabian horse. This horse became his screen partner in his 30+ years Western film career. He never owned this horse but was loaned by a friend's daughter. At the time of release there was some ridiculing from the press at the idea of James Stewart, the polished quiet "thin man", could play a tough westerner. But, audience members were heard to audibly gasp in shock at the scene where Mr. Stewart angrily confronts Dan Duryea gunman character at the saloon bar with an arm-twisting. This was a first film role for two Universal upcoming leading men, Rock Hudson (gun buying Indian Chief) and Anthony (Tony) Curtis (2nd Cavalry trooper, Doan).

*Emotion- A different film from those that came before. This film stressed character interactions that plain melodrama. It was enjoyable to experience the change of this Western genre into something more watch able. I am happy to own some film prop memorabilia of this film, a medal worn around Rock Hudson neck as an Indian Chief.

Batman: The Animated Series

One of the most successful and loved franchise of Batman, depicts the comic version at its best by going deep into the character's perspective rather than trying to cover-up or justify its sketchy tone. The animation is not only convincingly good but also seems like a lot of thought is invested on its cinematography which for the most part of it works on metaphorical way. Kevin Conroy seems the apt choice to be the voice of Batman (although not so sure about Bruce Wayne) and so does Robert Hastings for Commissioner James Gordon as it has the right amount of depth in it. A smarter approach by the makers by narrowing it down to only 20 minutes and get right to the point, keeping the audience engaged. It also brings in bigger cast like Mark Hamill to do the voice over of Joker, which is done with genuine passion and enthusiasm that is clearly visible on screen. Addition to that, the makers keep some of the villains under their sleeve and uses it as a trump card whenever felt necessary that helps in continuity and glue all individual cases as much as possible.

Season 01

It, being the longest and acclaimed season of it all since this is where the scrutiny began which got the series its Emmy too. Since the season covers up more than half of the series, it comes with larger expectations to fill especially on terms of character development; the key that helps the viewers last long and enthusiast throughout the course of it. Also, it takes a smarter approach on projecting more of newer character's perspective (mostly its the villain), as it helps to create the anticipated impact.

His Silicon Soul

It starts with an intriguing perspective that hooks the audience from the first act and reels them in with an even pace where every bit of entertaining and enthralling pieco of various acts are offered and ends satisfactorily if not effective as anticipated.
All of the remarkable themes from 'Heart of Steel' are back in full force with 'His Silicon Soul', only this time with a sobering Philip K. Dick streak. Replacing people with robot copies is one thing, but a fully capable Batman with no idea he's a cyborg takes it to a whole new level. This is amazingly dark for a kids show; Batman's evenly matched, the threat of hijacked global defense systems is über-serious and the measure of a man looms large over all of it.

For its venue, the ideas presented here are refreshingly all-ages and this stands as an episode that I've found greater appreciation for as an adult. It's great-looking, bears surprising depth and as entertaining as they come.

After Bentley sells Professor Larson a worthless ranch, Hoppy tells banker Waite there is silver on the ranch. Waite tells Bentley and Bentley tries to buy it back. When he fails, Waite lends money to finance a mine but puts a 30 day due date on it. Hoppy takes over running the mine but Bentley puts his henchman to work to make sure the venture fails.
A banker is trying to cheat people out of their silver-rich land. Hoppy learns that the banker is in league with an outlaw gang.
Hoppy wears his tan rancher's outfit throughout the film, so we know right off that this isn't going to be a great Hoppy movie. But it is very good, especially for a late entry in the series (this is one of the very last Hoppy films). Trivia section: Elaine Riley is prettier & a better actress than most of the young heroines in the Hoppy series (who were always present to give Lucky or Johnny or whatever young sidekick a mild love interest); she appeared in 5 Hoppy movies, from 1946-48; I was surprised to learn (on imdb) that she's English, she doesn't have the slightest trace of an English accent. We learn that California's real name is "Clarence" (Carlson). We learn that the Big Dome Saloon, in Spring City, offers "free lunches." We learn that in keeping with his wholesome image, Hoppy "never touches" cigars. The silver mine/crooked Westerners vs. naive Easterners plot is interesting, with some turns & several nice touches. There are a couple of obvious gaffs, including Hoppy firing a shot back at his own men during a horse chase (no baddies are even visible around the bend); 5 baddies push a flat lying boulder that must weigh half a ton; & not to be outdone, Hoppy lifts a mine girder that must weigh several hundred pounds! Overall well-done & enjoyable, with three gunfights & good action scenes. I rate it 7/10.

COMMENT: This entry provides an opportunity for little-known but prolific character actor Joel Friedkin to really wear out his welcome with some repetitious comic turns involving a butterfly net.

Otherwise, we are treated to the familiar "B"-western plot where our soft-headed heroes gladly sign an agreement to meet a deadline and then the baddies do their darndest to prevent them.

All the familiar ploys are brought into play. But while the script offers nothing new, it does (aside from the Friedkin runaround) make for a fast-moving and action-paced Saturday kids' matinee hour.
